The 1936 Rhode Island and Providence Plantations Tercentenary commemorative half dollar includes a rising sun in the background on its obverse. The 1935-39 Arkansas Statehood Centennial half dollars feature a large rising sun at the bottom of the coin's reverse. An eagle is shown perched on the sun with 13 bold rays (one for each of the Confederate states) rising behind it; some of the tops/tips of the rays that appear from behind the central Arkansas "Diamond" are at odd/impossible angles in relation to the sun - artistic license! Though its "face" is hiding behind the clouds, the sun is clearly shining on the Old Swedes Church as depicted on the obverse of the 1936 New Sweden - Delaware Tercentenary commemorative half dollar. The reverse presents the Kalmar Nyckel. the lead ship of the two that brought the original settlers to Delaware. The coin's design is the work of Carl L. Schmitz. The coin was issued to commemorate the three-hundredth anniversary of the landing of the Swedes in Delaware and the founding of New Sweden via the building of Fort Christina. The Swedes and Finns landed in Delaware in 1638 at present-day Wilmington, DE, making the actual 300th anniversary 1938. The half dollar was authorized in 1936, however, and its enacting Resolution stated, "The coins herein authorized shall bear the date 1936, irrespective of the year in which they are minted or issued." So, the Resolution created a 1936-dated coin, struck by the Mint in 1937, for a 1938 anniversary. The coin was sponsored by the Delaware Swedish Tercentenary Commission; a tercentenary celebration was held June 27, 1938 in Wilmington. 1936 New Sweden - Delaware Tercentenary Half Dollar    I've posted multiple time about the Delaware half dollar, its related medals, its original ephemera and even a numismatic "cousin." The reverse of 1918 Illinois Statehood Centennial half dollar presents a modified version of the Illinois State Seal that was adopted in 1867. Included among the elements of the Seal is a rising sun, seen in the distant horizon to the right of the eagle (viewer's perspective), between the three and four o'clock positions.
