Bump111 I am not tracking the mints right now, but at the very end of the challenge I will do an enormous recap in which I list the quantity from every date and every mintmark. I have noticed that I am finding more D's and S's on the west coast.

Keep looking! Do you think you may be able to do a huge quarter roll hunt later? After you finish with the pennies of course.

"ARE YOU KIDDING ME!" That is what I yelled when I went through a total of 4300 pennies and found 9, yes 9 wheat cents. I honestly don't even feel like continuing this hunt right now. It's a waste of time if I only find 5-10 wheats a box. I am going to explore other banks and ways to get coins so that I can hopefully have better luck. I will keep searching, but it is not very enjoyable right now.

A break might do some good, but hopefully the other banks will pan out for you. Good luck!

Over the years I've averaged about three wheats per 2,500 cents searched. Once--early 2013--I found three customer wrapped rolls of 100% wheats.

I imagine your searches have taken you to banks from the SF Bay Area to the LA Basin. San Luis Obispo and Bakersfield may have some interesting finds.

Well, another box and another 6 wheat cents. I am very dissapointed, but I will continue to do this challenge as promised. I just picked up another $50 in pennies, and about 2/3 of them are customer wrapped, so I may have better luck this time around. I should have another post tonight. Thanks for the support!

Dimes are a welcome surprise. Over the years I've found around 130--no silver, just post '65 dimes.

Well, I'm about 1/3 of the way through this $50 and I think I'm going to have to exclude it from the totals. Multiple rolls had dimes and many of them were short. Not a single one has a Wheat cent.

Well, the last 2/3 of the pennies closed out strong with 12 wheat cents and a few foreign finds, so I have decided to include them in the totals. I'm currently working on a solution to get coins from a different bank. The real problem is not the bank, but the center. Right now my coins are coming from the Brinks center in Los Angeles, and these seem to be at least 60% shield cents. I'm going to see if I can find a bank that orders coins from somewhere else. Until next time!

If you haven't tried this already, make a run through bank branches located well within in residential areas. I've found that these branches will often have a higher incidence of customer wrapped rolls which may contain dumps of someone's unintentional hoarding--older folks cleaning out drawers, jars, boxes, etc. of cents accumulated over the years. I've had decent luck getting wheats (and pristine 1960s) this way. My wheat rate at more commercially-oriented branch locations is dismal at best.

All-in-all, your recovery rate of interesting items is a bit better than mine.

Good luck!
