FWIW: I was curious, so I looked it up...
The nine stars seen on the obverse (on the shield) and reverse (below the denomination) of the coin represent the nine islands of the Azores archipelago: Corvo, Faial, Flores, Graciosa, Pico, Santa Maria, São Jorge, São Miguel and Terceira.
I'm always curious about the meaning behind symbolic uses of generic elements.
