Time for a counterstamp on this thread. Given their small planchets, half dimes were less often subjected to to this practice. Here are my database notes on the issuer of the USE G.G.G. & USE G.G.G.G. counterstamps ....

GOODWIN'S GRAND GOOSE GREASE AND GOODWIN'S GRAND GREASE JUICE WERE PATENTED AS HAIR TONIC AND BREATH PERFUME, RESPECTIVELY. CHARLES H. GOODWIN, AN APOTHECARY, WAS LOCATED AT 49 WATER STREET IN EXETER, NH. AN 1856 ADVERTISEMENT CONFIRMS THE ATTRIBUTION OF THESE COUNTERSTAMPS.

I don't think I'd like to be on the tram next to someone who used GOODWIN'S GRAND GREASE JUICE.

Perhaps, this "juice" is what defined city slickers?

BTW .... Dave Bowers attributed this issue and wrote about it.
