So this very nice 1944-S was listed as "planchet error". Tossed a low bit at it and got it for $3.66 plus shipping. Seemed reasonable given how nice the coin is.

Looked like a standard minor tapered planchet, but I couldn't figure out that line along the wheat on the reverse. So I got it today and weighed it at 2.96g. Not very underweight, given that from the line outward looks somewhat like a bit of lamination peeled off and went away not leaving much room for an underweight tapered planchet.

So not really sure what to make of it exactly, but I like it. Opinions are welcome and appreciated to help with understanding what exactly went on here.

Very neat. I found a '64 Lincoln tapered planchet once that weighed up 3.0 grams on the scale, so I think it's possible it's a tapered Planchet, it just Didn't reduce a lot of weight. What does the edge look like?

The edge is quite normal looking except on the reverse more or less exactly where the line cuts across it is too thin. Not a dramatic drop to being too thin like an incomplete clip is supposed to have, but a sharp-ish taper to the thinned area. Really looks like a flake peeled off there before the strike and created the weak areas rather than a tapered planchet, but I don't know.

What does that edge look like. I can't see much distortion on the roundness of the coin? If the OBV and REV rotated correctly? If so, then the affected areas don't seem to be opposite each other?
