Hey guy's, so I'm waiting for my Charlton books I ordered to get here, they should be here this week but I thought I would ask if anyone knows about any DDR's found for 1970? I found one post using the search bar on the site but that was it and it really didn't say a whole lot, at least not any confirmation.

Anyway I have a really nice example I would like to get some opinions on, there is notching on the date, more noticeable on the 7, the 0 and notching in "CANADA" the "1 Cent" letters are also fairly thick.

Thanks in advance.

That tip of the 7 speaks volumes to me. Good eye!!

Generally, the degree of offset with doubled dies is what drives the demand and interest, and ultimately the value of these. Just ask any US collector of doubled dies... So the 1955 25c doubled date, 1882H Victorian large cent DDO, 1974 nickel dollar double yokes, 1967 1c DDO, and 1965 1c doubled bud- tend to have good prices, because of the degree of offset.

That said, nobody really has searched that hard in Canadian decimal coinage for doubled dies, other than maybe the doubled buds in the small cent series. So have at it, and keep posting your findings.

Thank you SPP-Ottawa,

When I was searching a few rolls the other day what caught my attention at first was the condition of this one and I knew there was an extra bud found for this year in the past so I started looking into it further and although this does not have an extra bud the 7 was the first thing I actually noticed, followed by the letters in Canada and the rest of the date. My Charlton books arrived this afternoon (perfect timing) so I have been looking at the 70th edition you spoke about and I haven't put it down yet, I plan to document all the legitimate modern errors that have no readily available information for that I find from 1930 up to 2012 so that others have more information on modern errors that they may be interested in looking for and help weed out the legitimate DDR's and DDO's from all of the DDD and MD.

The doubled die is my favourite error to find and I have been finding quite a few in years that are not listed anywhere ( like the 1941 I previously posted that you can see here http://goccf.com/t/363666 ) I did find the 1951 in the Charlton though which was pretty cool.

The doubled die is my favourite error

Doubled die is not an error, it is a variety, other sections of this forum are abuzz with DDO and DDR posts as other types of doubling are errors and for the most part are literally a dime a dozen.

I should really know this by now but I do tend to get the two mixed up from time to time, to correct myself doubled die is my favourite variety.

I do spend some time in other areas of the forum but most of the DDO's and DDR's I see are in the US section or aren't on very many Canadian small cents and mostly larger decimals, although I could be wrong as I am still somewhat new to the forum and still getting use to navigating the website.

I am happy you found the 1951... I am still searching for one...

Glad you like the 70th edition. I wrote the small cent variety section, and since that was the last edition edited by Bill Cross, I had a tiny bit more freedom to lay that one out. You'll notice - there isn't much there, and that is despite Zoell documenting every single die crack, Machine Doubling and other stuff in his books - nobody really searched for the doubled die offsets before... True varieties of the dies that struck the coins.

My advice to you is to keep notes and organize your photos on what you find - you might be called upon someday to contribute to an update...
