I found one of these doubled dies on a worn flying eagle and really liked the look of the doubling. Went over to ebay and cherrypicked this one to put in my collection.

Then I realized there are several very similar DDO's for this year and wanted to be sure I got the attribution correct. It looks like a "broken wing" but honestly could use some expert help to make sure I get it right. Thanks!

Looks like DDO-002/S-15

Edit:

After further inspection, I can't seem to find a match. Unlisted?

Looks like DDO-001 (Snow-3, FS-105). Yours has a broken wing tip so it's not DDO-006 (Snow-4, FS-101), which has a missing wing tip. None of the other DDOs are as strong as those two.

Nice find!

PS: It's not DDO-002 (Snow-15, FS-102). That one has a corrected, re-engraved wing tip.

Interesting so far. A bit of a disagreement in attribution between two folks I know quite well know their stuff. And didn't expect it to be very rare as I actually found two with similar doubling in a worn lot of 100 flying eagles, and then when I decided I wanted one just went to ebay and found one at auction and won it for $25. Made it seem like they are fairly common.

Tanner you are talking about the wing tip, which is what I came to understand is the only seemingly easy way to separate these two although on a high grade one the beak doubling seems distinctive as well. But I didn't really find a good image comparison of what the broken wing tip vs the missing wing tip looks like. How sure are you it's DDO-001? That's what I came up with but honestly got a tad confused between what the CPG was saying and the indianvarieties site was saying. The CPG shows a DDO-008 FS-105 that looks most like mine in the images but DDO-003, FS-102 also looks similar. Still confused.

It does look very similar to Die #1, and it doesn't look like Die #2 either. It is very close to Die 1, but I feel that they aren't the same based on the wingtip and spread on certain letters. It may be a new die, or later die state die 1.

Excellent, thanks! It's certain with that description and the clear die marker to the upper right of the M in AMERICA.

So Snow 3 = DDO-001 (not DDO-008 as listed in the CPG) = FS-105

I'll have to figure out where I put those two worn ones and see if I can get an attribution on them as well, which likely will be much harder.

The CPG has some blatant errors regarding the 1857 flying eagles.

For example:
Nearly everything about FS-103 in the CPG is incorrect or just confusing.
1. The doubled die pictured and referenced (DDO-006) does not have a RPD
2. DDO-006 is Snow-4 not 10
3. The RPD pictured (RPD-002) is Snow-10
4. Snow-10 (RPD-002) does have a DDO but it's a very minor one (DDO-009)
5. The cud mentioned is paired with the RPD and minor DDO (Snow-10) not the major DDO (Snow-4)

I've had some personal experience with this listing so I ultimately I don't think the CPG is the best reference for flying eagles.

I have Snow-10. I submitted it to ANACS because of the cud and when it came back Snow-10 it took me forever to figure out how they came up with that. Only because of how messed up the info in the CPG is and that indianvarities.com doesn't have the cud linked to the RPD/minor DDO.

Quite awhile back I purchased Rick Snows attribution guides in pdf format. It's awesome and very handy on my iPad.
