Looked like damage when I first found it. Then it looked like a two-tiered lamination with one layer a bit deeper than the other. Then I just really didn't know.

So, with no damage at all visible on the reverse, what is going on with the obverse?

That is my initial thought too. Part of the issue is that this coin seems to have circulated after losing that chunk of metal. I hate for us to always be bothering @mike diamond, but consider reaching out to him for a definitive opinion.

Lamination peeled off ? Pre strike would've left a weak spot on the reverse.
