So I found a coin that I wanted , made them an offer $5 less than their listing price which was less than $40 . Figuring I got this coin at a very good price ; By the time I paid for shipping and e-Bay sales tax I virtually paid full retail for the coin . Things were much better before the added tax . Best to at least find a seller with free shipping .

One always has to take into account the other costs when buying.

There's one German auction that I never look at - they charge VAT, shipping and handling as well as buyer's premium, and online bidding surcharge. Their shipping fee starts at 50 euros.

They seem not to be perturbed at not getting bids from the UK - they told me that their shipping charge reflects their costs.

It is not an eBay sales tax, it is a sales tax for the state you live in. If your state exempts such purchases from sales tax, remind eBay of this and you will get a refund. EBay mistakenly charges for this quite often.

I guess if we like roads , parks , and all related things that go with taxation , that is the way it is .
I really hate filing the BCST and the GST/ HST every quarter for our business , unfortunately
part of being a good citizen .
Oh by the way every thing we sell from Canada to the USA gets taxed as well depending on the
State .

You just need to move to a state that exempts coins from sales tax! It seems that people who live in those states have a built in advantage in winning eBay auctions.

In Maryland Any purchase over $1000 that you can argue is related to numismatics is sales tax exempt.

Ebay just started collecting sales tax for Georgia in April. The Wild Wild West is slowly disappearing.

Unfortunately, the seller has no control on the sales tax thing, these are applied automatically based off of the states...
