Brought a new coin back from Europe for my collection of Coins of Composers. This one commemorates Jaroslav Jezek (1906-1942), a Czech composer. Although almost blind, he turned out to be a prolific composer. Initially, he was influenced by Stravinsky and Arnold Schönberg. Later he found his own, specific and modern style and became a popular jazz composer in pre-war Czechoslovakia.
Another coin from the Czech Republic in the mail today. This 200 Korun coin commemorates the composer Frantisek Kmoch (1848-1912). Inspired by the military marches of the Austro-Hungarian empire, Kmoch wrote his own marches borrowing from Czech tradition, folklore and folk music. Nowadays, Kmoch is considered to be the most popular march composer of the Czech Republic, after Julius Fucík. His oeuvre includes about 500 works.
From a seller in Spain comes this commemorative 25 ECU coin, It features Catalunya composer Eric Granados (1867-1916) who is best known for his piano suites "Los majos enamorados" and "Goyescas".
Today in the mail, a set of commemorative coins from two completely different composers in location and style. Julius Ernest Wilhelm Fu#269;ík (1872 - 1916) was a Bohemian composer (currently the Czech Republic) and conductor of military bands. He was a prolific writer, composing over 400 marches, polkas, and waltzes. He is best know for his "Florentiner March" and the "Entrance of the Gladiators", the latter of which is widely recognized, often under the title "Thunder and Blazes", as one of the most popular theme tunes for circus clowns.

Mohamed Abdel Wahab (1902 - 1991), was a prominent Egyptian singer, actor, and composer. He is best known for his Romantic and Egyptian patriotic songs. He also composed the national anthem of Libya which was adopted from 1951 to 1969 and again since 2011.
Two commemorative coins form Europe in the mail today: a 10 Euro coin commemorating Fredrik Pacius (1809-1891) and another 10 Euro coin commemorating Richard Strauss (18641949). Fredrik Pacius was a German-Finnish composer and conductor who lived most of his life in Finland. He has been called the "Father of Finnish music". In 1848, Pacius wrote the music to the poem "Vårt land" by Johan Ludvig Runeberg, which was to become Finland's national anthem. Pacius's music was also used for the Estonian national anthem "Mu isamaa, mu õnn ja rõõm" and the Livonian ethnic anthem "Min iz#257;m#333;, min sindim#333;". Although quite famous in Finland, he is not as well-known as the granddaddy of Finland music, Sibelius.

Richard Strauss was a German composer and conductor best known for his tone poems and operas. Considered a leading composer of the late Romantic and early modern eras, he has been described as the successor of Richard Wagner and Franz Liszt. Along with Gustav Mahler, he represents the late German Romanticism, in which he pioneered orchestration in combination with an advanced harmonic style. His most important works in include "Don Juan", "Also sprach Zarathustra", "Salome", "Elektra", and "Der Rosenkavalier".
A new commemorative coin from a LCS: a 100 Markkaa coin from Finland commemorating Jean Sibelius (1865-1957). Jean Sibelius was a Finnish composer of the late Romantic and early-modern periods. He is widely regarded as his country's greatest composer and his music is often credited with having helped Finland develop a national identity during its struggle for independence from Russia. The core of his oeuvre is his set of seven symphonies, which, like his other major works, are regularly performed in Finland and many other countries. His other best-known compositions are "Finlandia", the "Karelia Suite", the choral symphony "Kullervo", and "The Swan of Tuonela" (from the "Lemminkäinen Suite").
