Cherrypickers' Volume II 6th Edition Hardcover - December 6, 2022
by Bill Fivaz

I Amazon Prime pre-ordered this edition on the 5th of DEC. There's no way to ask anyone about it when it's shipping (if it's even at the shipping point) I've been to all the coin websites to ask around and no one has answered me. Tried contacting the publishers.... still, no response.

Spent $42 on the pre-order, if it don't work out, I can get my $ back, but Come On!!

Anyone know anything? All my hope is lost.

New supposed available date is 2/1/2023, I'll believe it when I see them though. Been getting back logged due to supply chain issues for well over a year now.

This has been going on and on like the energizer bunny on steroids. The last I spoke to Whitman they had originally mentioned that The CherryPickers Guide 6th edition, vol II book will be available in June/July and now available for pre order. Vol II covers collectible die varieties of Half-dimes through silver and modern dollars. The re-print in book form of the Volume I 6th edition which has been out of print for a bit will then be available again around October which led me to sell my older volume 5s. Kindle digital versions are Vol 5 of Cherrypickers by the way but are also available for reasonable price at least now. Then the date was updated to Dec 6th and Amazon at least was taking pre orders but on dec 6th was not released and currently was taken off pre order list. Other sites do now mention the 2/1/2023 but it may not be firm either so I'll just wait until theres a more solid release date for the Vol 2 and 1 reprint. There is also a new 5th edition of the book Strike It Rich with Pocket Change: Error Coins Bring Big Money (Paperback) out now 0593328604 on amz and elsewhere that has many of the worthwhile to spend time looking for cherrypicker varieties in there as well, so there is a good choice until such time as the new cherrypickers are back in print and at some reasonable cost.

Great news! I can't wait.

Seems like it will release just in time for the World's Fair of Money. That might be my first chance to see the book!

FYI Everyone.

I pre ordered the book yesterday on Whitman.com with my credit card and the pre order went through no problem, but just be aware that Whitman now takes the funds out of your Credit Card Account immediately, not when the book is to be shipped in August 2023.

* I called their Customer Service Dept to confirm why they deducted the funds now and not after the order was being shipped and the Rep. confirmed it was a change of their policy and that any Pre Orders are now being charged immediately upon placing the pre-order.*

* I also checked on Amazon Prime to see if they updated anything and the book is on their site, but as Unavailable!

If you want the book, for now, it looks like you can only pre order on the Whitman.com site.

Good Luck Everyone!

Finally have some more information on the Cherrypicker's Books coming soon. As others have posted you can and have been able to pre-order some already at the Whitman website. Here is the latest posting from Wayne Homren editor of the E-Sylum, the biggest news I get is they book is now split into 3 volumes with the growth of new varieties found and discovered:

Quote:

Whitman Publishing announces the upcoming release of the newest CherryPickers' Guide to Rare Die Varieties. The sixth edition, volume II, will debut in August 2023 at the American Numismatic Association World's Fair of Money in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In the meantime, the 320-page spiralbound-hardcover book can be preordered for $39.95 online, including at Whitman.com. After the ANA show the CherryPickers' Guide will be available from booksellers nationwide.

To "cherrypick" is to examine coins that appear normal at first glance, seeking those with unusual characteristics—overdates, repunched mintmarks, doubled and tripled dies, and similar features—that reveal them to be rare and valuable. The CherryPickers' Guide uses close-up photographs and text descriptions to show collectors what to look for. It includes rarity ratings and retail values in multiple grades.

For the latest volume, CherryPickers' Guide coauthor Bill Fivaz and professional numismatist Larry Briggs coordinated edits and updates. They reached out to the hobby community for advice, recommendations, research, market analysis, and photographs. The new volume features more than 440 die varieties, including nearly 80 new additions. The book covers Capped Bust and Liberty Seated half dimes, dimes, and quarters; Barber dimes and quarters; Mercury dimes; Roosevelt dimes; twenty-cent pieces; Standing Liberty quarters; and Washington quarters, including the State, D.C., Territorial, and National Park series.

Picking up from there, volume III of the sixth edition is slated to debut in 2024. It will cover Capped Bust, Liberty Seated, and Barber half dollars, plus Liberty Walking, Franklin, and Kennedy half dollars, Trade dollars, Morgan and Peace silver dollars, modern dollar coins, gold coins (dollars through double eagles), classic commemoratives, bullion, and coins struck for the Philippines under U.S. sovereignty.

Bill Fivaz, a coin collector since 1950, has earned recognition as one of the country's most respected authorities on numismatic errors and die varieties. He is a longtime contributor to the Guide Book of United States coins (the " Red Book"), a past governor of the American Numismatic Association, and a past member of the United States Mint's Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee. With the late J.T. Stanton he published the first CherryPickers' Guide in 1990, launching the modern boom in interest in die varieties.

Volume editor Larry Briggs is well known to the hobby community as a dealer, author, and educator. He was president of the American Numismatic Association's Authentication Committee. A student of history and archaeology, Briggs served in the U.S. Air Force and worked for Ford Motor Company before launching his own business, Larry Briggs Rare Coins, in 1978. His specialties include error coins and die varieties, Liberty Seated coinage, and early American coppers.

Good info @Westcoin on the upcoming Volume III 6th edition anticipated in 2024 (anticipated is a good word for cherrypicking book release dates ) Yes the Volume II has been available as mentioned above to pre order at whitman right now if you want it right upon release or will hopefully be at booksellers everywhere after that if you miss that as mentioned, but I didnt hear back when asking about another reprint or update of Volume I, 6th edition which is needed. If you have further info before me about that feel free to post.

Is it better to pre-order this? A few years ago I read/heard people talking about it as if it'd be hard to get and resold for a lot more.

Volume II, 6th edition is currently expected Aug 1st so probably best to preorder anytime before that date direct from whitman. They did indicate it will be widely available after that so perhaps Volume II wont be hard to get after that at least for a little while. However, considering that this thread goes back to 2020 on when it was going to be released with numerous changes indicates that this book is not guaranteed to be available as they state or ongoing after some amount are printed. It is also telling that Amazon hasnt reinstated pre orders for the book and cancelled them, but lists the new release date and I'm sure will carry it once they get copies https://www.amazon.com/Cherrypicker.../0794850111/

Further there is no info yet on a reprinting of Volume I 6th edition which you can see is quite expensive on the secondhand market because of that and only a 5th edition is available as a kindle digital version, so again that may indicate the same thing that its not guaranteed to be available new to buy ongoing. For the moment the safe recommendation would be to get it as a pre order or shortly after while copies are being printed and available more widely for the time being.
