Picked this one up along with a bunch of other business strikes. I know it's difficult to determine without original packaging. I feel this one can easily pull a MS66/SP66, obviously it's a big price jump from SP to MS.

Lighting wasn't cooperating, took several shots. Obverse looks business, but the reverse has me saying SMS

I could never tell the difference between the two. I don't even know what the indicators are or what to look for. I have a bag of 65's I've found while roll searching. It probably doesn't make any difference at this point. They are all circulated and beat-up.

Skip to 6:39 where the video specifically starts 1965s side by side, then 66 and 67.

Thanks for the video Earle42.

I know the LDS SMS have that business strike appearance, the obverse was throwing me for a loop, die state doesn't look later, in hand has nice cartwheel. The pics make it look more reflective than it is, but the reverse has me saying SMS, especially after that compare and contrast.

I will admit from your initial pics I was thinking SMS anyway from the looks and coloring...but cameras can be fooled.

BTW - this guy has tons of other such videos - I am subbed and enjoy the vids each morning. Amazingly open and honest guy. Planning taking the trip to his store on Monday!

believe it or not, The major grading companies don't get it right either, some coins labeled SP or SMS have been found to have been identified DDO business strikes by cherry pickers.
Aren't high quality business strikes more valuable than the SMS versions anyways?

What I look for
If it is a cameo or deep cameo, should be SMS.
Are the fields / device smoother or just good luster?
How are the rims? Sharp and squared?
On the reverse, how is the area where the shield meeting the tail feathers? Is it mushy? If mushy, lean towards business strike.
On the reverse, how is the banner with E PLURIBUS UNUM, again if mushy lean towards business strike.
Both where the shield meets the tail feathers and the EPU banner, it should be sharp delineation, BUT this could be a sharp business strike, and still not a guarantee.

You can also look for any of the DDO or DDR, or varieties for that year and rule those out. If it is an identified variety as a business strike, it will rule it out from SMS. but as I said, sometimes business strikes are graded and slabbed SMS by the major TPGs. it's hard to tell with 100% certainty with non cameo SMS vs, early die state business strikes.

No shock there whatsoever. I have found the result of doing more and more honest homework into the product of these companies indicates their greatest asset is their marketing departments.
