Aloha and Happy Monday everyone!

I was enjoying myself at the coin show in Utah this weekend. I've decided to give a little attention to finishing a date set of Draped Liberty Half Cents, so was taking some time to really look at those within my meager budget, which is generally around AG.

On a few of these, I noticed there was a light blue/purple hue.

Is this natural aging of the copper that sometimes happens, or this evidence of an old cleaning or something else chemical?

Thanks!
My hoard of '82s is up to 199! 218 BC x 1, 118 BC x 3, 18 BC x 1, 82 x 1, 182 x 1, 282 x 2, 582 x 2, 682 x 1, 782 x 2, 882 x 1, 982 x 4, 1082 x 1 1182 x 8, 1282 x 2, 1382 x 1, 1482 x 5, 1582 x 13, 1682 x 14, 1782 x 55, 1882 x 49, 1982 x 32

I've seen it go both ways. Sometimes with an old cleaning you will have unnatural toning occur, chemicals used are typically to blame, especially if trace chemical was not removed after cleaning. There is also plenty of copper that does this naturally. Case by case scenario, which pictures would definitely help solve!

Could also be a case of an artificially toned coin, in this instance I would just do a lot of compare/contrast searching between NT/AT to acquire an eye on these.

Agree, that sort of coloring would suggest to me the coin has been worked on in some fashion.

I appreciate it! I passed on them because my Numisnerd spidey senses told me that odds are something is likely not right on them. Thanks for the insights.

I sold a collection on consignment that came from the home of a HEAVY smoker. Like the Whitman and Danscos REEKED of smoke. Almost all of the cents, IH and Lincoln, had blue/purple toning. There were many that were obviously cleaned, and many that clearly were not. Cleaned and and untouched coins ALL toned the same. You have to look past the toning to the coin surface and make the determination. Cents DO tone that way very easily without a purposeful attempt or previous cleaning. The IH in my avatar is one of the ones I bought for myself. It is not cleaned in any way. But being the home of a smoker sure as heck toned it.
