1988-D DDO Or Machine Doubled?

chriseug New Member United States 10 Posts	Posted 10/06/2020 01:42 am Hi- ran across this coin because of the notch, then noticed the high bump on the D that looked like doubling. Closer inspection shows the following. Thoughts? Looks different than the two on variety vista if it's actually a DDO, and all the others on here don't have this kind of definition. spruett001 Bedrock of the Community United States 12091 Posts	Posted 10/06/2020 01:56 am It looks like what is called "split plate doubling", which is not really an error. The copper plating splits during the strike and exposes some of the zinc core. This can lead to corrosion and bubbling around the splits, which can look like doubling because of the way it follows the letters/numbers. chriseug New Member United States 10 Posts	Posted 10/06/2020 02:28 am Thanks- I looked into several split plate/stretching examples. Just in case, I added one more image, almost looks like a D struck on top of a 45 degree S, but I assume that just wouldn't happen (?) Report this Post to the Staff
