This coin is up for sale at Great Collections current price is way above the guesses here at CCF!

https://www.greatcollections.com/Coin/992407

Bid as of June 7 is at $43,000.00 with 6 and a half days to go. Not a bad dealer junk box find at a coin show, just shows that you should at least look, have an open mind and not all the cherrypicks have been snapped up by a long shot.

I was looking at this one today, trying to place it in the consensus list in the book 1792 Birth of our coinage book I mentioned previously. No go but it sure is a nice one and only $100K more than this lowly example we are discussing.

Heck, I'd love to have even a PO1 of this coin. One of my all time favorite coins being from Jefferson's own silver most likely, and with a good chance he spent it via his own hand on that first trip along the coast with a small bag of them on hand.

No problem, I'm sure curious too, as I said I've been studying these coins seriously since the pandemic hit, Had just started reading the 1792 birth of the nations coinage book when it kicked off. Not much else to do other than look up various auction catalog lots as I read along. I can see why the book was so highly regarded, so much research went into writing it, it took all three authors plus some researchers as well. It's really one of the better books on a single date of coinage, especially all the census work in the last third of the book.

Really worth a read if you are interested in early coinage, Jefferson, the creation of our mint and coinage, it covers all the patters and other coin goodies from 1792 as well, I'd also suggest the NNP to add some even newer additional research on the silver centered cents.

I scored on an eBay grab, I'd had it in my want list for a couple of years since it was published, then I saw a copy pop up at a BIN price of $16.00 couldn't say no at more than half off. Heritage is still selling them directly it's under their Bid/Buy link scroll to "Catalog and Book Orders" then scroll to the pop up lists of books. They have a few I'd still like to own, just not at the prices they want, eventually with enough patience they always pop up for a deal somewhere I find. But even full list price of $40.00 is a good deal for the information contained. I think you will enjoy it too Ty!

I was also wondering about the painting on the cover, it was done by Pete Smith one of the authors, talented in more than just writing and research. I was sure it was from the era.

I know the dealer who purchased it from the person who found the coin. I was joking with him 6 weeks or so ago. I told him I saw the photos on Reddit and said to myself that it's the real McCoy so he must've been on the next flight out to find the finder of the coin. It's currently at 43 k with less than a week at GreatCollections.com....I'm sure he is going to make a pretty penny on this one.

Neat add Burnzy, I'd bet that dealer bought the coin super cheap too! I'd love to know how much, but I understand somethings are just secrets. I'd bet it was mid 4 figures or around that. I too saw the Reddit posting and knew it was real from the photos. Couldn't believe it when I saw it that it came from a junk box at a coin show though.

Whomever bidder #9 is on this coin wants it real bad. My opinion is he is in danger of paying too much for this coin.

I actually disagree westernsky, but only in part. While yes, compared to other examples, both those in equal and finer grades, he is paying wayyyyy to much. But, this coin is a bit different. It's got a great story to it being only discovered this year, a lot of collectors would like to have a piece like this.

Just saw this, don't know how I missed, but I can see with rarity like this and with the price higher than going, it wont be long that buyer will recover in not too distant future.

Only if I got the $$$$$$.
