The Mauryan Empire dominated the Indian subcontinent from 321 to 185 BCE.

Roughly 11.4 by 12.2 mm, with the weight coming in at 3.35 grams. Fineness unknown.

I thinking that based upon the weight this would be denominated as a pana.

I love this coin type and have many in my collection. What is interesting about this coin is that the Sun and 6 arm symbol punch marks are missing. These two symbols are present on all these coins. An interesting coin from an unknown series.

The go to reference on this coin type is "Punchmarked of the Indian Subcontinent Magadha- Mauryan Series" by Gupta & Hardaker.

Shameless plug: I have 60+ of this type coming up for auction at the end of the month.

Looking at the coin a little closer, I believe the punch mark at the lower left is the 6 arm symbol just worn, the animal punch mark is either an Elephant or a Camel, can't say for sure. Been checking my copy of Gupta and Hardaker but haven't had much luck trying to figure it out.

In conducting a bit of research on this one, I believe I've now positively identified it. First off, its weight would qualify it as a karshapana, not a pana as I'd thought. However in this case, lacking the sun punch as has already been pointed out, the marks that are present match up for a drachm of Salisuka, struck at either the Eran or Vidisa mint in the period 215-202 BCE.

Your coin seems to belong to Gupta/ Hardaker series VII, which lack the sun & six-armed symbols. Cf. G/H 592b-596a for coins with the symbol in the lower right corner in your photo. A couple of the symbols are unclear but it may be 595.

Dating is difficult. It is generally agreed that attribution to specific reigns is not possible given the present state of knowledge. Gupta and Hardaker date series VII between the accession of Ashoka (272 BC) and the end of Mauryan rule (c. 175 BC), contemporary with late series VI.

Although I hadn't explicitly said so, based upon what I can tell that would be my belief also.

Two symbols do appear to be a match for VII 595, but the rest are unclear as you say. Hopefully you will be able to identify one or two more symbols to be sure.
