The coin looks like it has a lamination issue. The alloy used had imperfection when it was rolled out, and now a layer has separated leaving this. Interesting and a really nice find!

We see lamination issue more often, on the silver/copper coinage. But not as often on Nickels. (75% copper, 25% Nickel)

That's a nice example of a lamination flaw and probably has a little premium value (like a few bucks).
