I placed my first order with Provident Metals for 20 oz of silver over $500. I always have stuff shipped to my Post Office box. Every bullion dealer I've ordered from requires a signature for delivery which I thought was standard practice. Normally when my order arrives they place a card in my box and I must sign for the package at the counter with my ID. Provident doesn't put a signature requirement on USPS orders under $1000 which I did not know.

So I went to check my box when the tracking number said it arrived and there was no package or card in my box. I went to the counter and they said they think the package got mixed in with a batch of Amazon returns and was sent to Amazon by mistake however the tracking number still says package was delivered. I called Provident the same day as soon as I got home. They filed a claim and the next day they said my claim was closed because the package was delivered. I called USPS and they are looking into it and they mentioned my package would only be insured for $50. I'm assuming Provident would have their own private insurance. However I have no proof weather the package was delivered or not. Not sure what I should do at this point. I would appreciate any suggestions.

I would highly discourage anyone ordering precious metals online without a signature required. For example if the Post Office delivered to the wrong address or box without a signature it becomes the buyers responsibility as soon as they release the package.

I understand it is my fault for not fully reading their shipping policy. However they do not make it clear during the checkout process that packages under $1000 will just be released with no signature. I also did not see an option to upgrade for a signature. Would anyone want $999 of coins left on their front porch?

Perhaps it will still be found by Amazon.

Yes, still possible Amazon will send it back to Provident or to my post office.

USPS is at fault. Whether they claim is was "delivered" or not doesn't matter. In fact, claiming it is "delivered" while not in your possession is FRAUD.
The onus is on USPS to provide you with the package. Period.

Par for the course for crappy USPS customer service. I would try to do a charge back for non-delivery.

signature required means nothing in during covid.

I ordered a firearm online and came home to it sitting on my front porch.

True but at least you could say I never signed for it and they wouldn't have a signature or name to prove it.

That's what's nice about a ring doorbell. Can see when/if anything came.

It appears they have 8 complaints filed in BBB, and 7 of them is within the last 12 months, but clearly the issues is with USPS. Not many options here, perhaps get the contact number of the Amazon warehouse and speak to the receiving department, look out for a package not return to Amazon.

Yes, clearly its USPS fault for losing the package. Signature would at lease give me some protection. The package could not be marked "delivered" without a signature.

I'm not saying don't order from Provident or JM but just be aware this could be a potential issue.

The postal employee told me that Amazon would tag the package and send it back if they find it.

I had the same problem with an eBay coin shipment. I filed a police report and sent it to eBay. The seller refunded the purchase.

If USPS logs it as delivered I don't disbelieve them. In fact, USPS did an internal check to make sure that it wasn't lost in their system somehow. IMO it was stolen from my mailbox. The onus is on the seller to deliver the item to me and should have insured it.

eBay only requires that it be delivered to your mailbox unless over a certain dollar threshold in which case being sent with a signature requirement is dictated.

insurance would've done nothing for the seller in that case. USPS delivered the package, so why would they be responsible? who's paying the insurance?
