It is likely environmental toning, either from the ground or the air. Seems to be some scratches on the reverse, so maybe the coin spent some time on or in the ground.

Has the characteristics of a cent having spend time in soil at one point, perhaps even the muck at the bottom of a pond.

fire damage can make a penny black, if the fire did not touch the penny
