I have been toying around with coins collected off streets and random other places that were finding them and I have had some great offers of help but I haven't had time to sort and organize yet but I just found out of blue on my kitchen floor hidden behind cats feeding station a penny that weighs 3.17 grams on digital scale. The scales calibration is definitely correct and the date on coin is 1982 I'm trying best to send pic as I just read advice on a post on how to do so effectively. Just curious what, why and how this penny weighs more than others. I've dropped penny in box of makeup products which is huge and filled to top so will definitely post picture if it's worth bothering with digging into taking out of hundreds of beauty products I seem to keep buying and never using if it's just ordinary trait of coin that year. Thank you kindly for all of the sweet, kind, helpful and definitely patient human beings on this forum.

Would be cool to have large, sharp photos of the coin--front and back. I believe your coin is within tolerance weight-wise. Others will chime in.

I believe that weight is within tolerance for a brass alloy 1982 cent (as opposed to a plated zinc example).

1982 was the transition year from bronze/brass (3.11 g) to copper-plated zinc (2.5 g). Yours is the former.

It's made of copper instead of Zinc.

As mentioned, in 1982 cent were made from two different compositions 95% copper 5% zinc, and zinc with a plating of pure copper. The 95% copper coins are spec'ed to weigh 3.11 grams and the plated zinc are spec'ed to weigh 2.5 grams. But there are also tolerance ranges allowed for those weights, +/- .13 gramms for the 95% copper, and +/- .1 grams for the plated zinc.

This means the 95% copper cents can weigh anywhere between 2.98 grams and 3.24 grams. (your coin falls in this range nicely), and the plated zinc from 2.4 to 2.6 grams.
