I have 5 1997 Littleton silver eagles in original packaging. Some at least one is very nicely toned. Are they worth more as is or opening and selling them as 1997 eagles?

I do not think that any serious coin collector ascribes any additional value to a Littleton plastic envelope.

Any serious collector? No. That said, we have been successful in selling them at a premium soley due to the brand name.

IMHO, they over charge and more than some times over grade. The packaging is what makes the coins tone and not always nicely. I would steer clear.

Littleton is a cross between a coin company and a carnival huckster. Their target audience is uninformed "collectors" on the fringe of the hobby.

Littleton has been around a long time. In my experience, their quality is high but as others have stated their prices tend to exceed market value. If you don't like the Littleton packaging, you are not going to lose anything by moving the coins to a better preservation/storage solution.

Littleton filled many holes in my Lincoln and Buffalo (Bison) nickel folders during my early years.

Littleton provides a service. Some want this service. I once wanted a drink - in a hotel near Orlando airport. A manhattan -- two jiggers whiskey, one red vermouth. Price paid: $18.00. Needed three. bought one. Home and off the airplane I sipped two more. Cost: $3.00.

Littleton has for decades sold coins alongside convenience. As a coin enthusiast, I find Littleton inconvenient and condemn all who pay for convenience.

Given the option of choosing between a very interesting coin or a rather valuable one, I'd choose the former every time . My vexation lies in the fact that the two so often coincide.

you'd make more selling them in the packaging. I don't know why you'd take them out

I will not take them out of their original packaging. Of the 5 4 have very minimal toning but one has a beautiful golden toning that looks beautiful.
