Just got this in today from an ebay purchase. Luster is great but as is the case with most New Orleans coins the strike is soft. I think it'll pull 64 but wanted to see what anyone else thought. Thanks in advance.

1882 is the best date!

With the softness in the hair and ear, how sure are you they don't slide this to AU58? That's usually the first place I look.

Also, how notable are the light scratches above the date? Those could limit a hoped for MS64 too.

Luster looks pretty good though.

Collects82 - just and FYI, you cant just go by that as different mints and years affect how you assess these. for instance if you can find a 92(O) with this kind of strike you found a gem as its very rare to see this kind of strike on that year. on this one you can see the luster on the flat area around the ear as well as breast which would eliminate it from being a circulated coin.

------

the 82(O) are typically average strikes. this one is a little weak for the year. I think the obverse comes in at around MS62 due to the strike and less than average surface preservation. the reverse fairs a little better at MS63 maybe 64. I'm having a hard time with the obverse bringing this one to MS63 but it may just squeak by as there are really no big scratches or flaws that would draw it down to a 62. I'm just not a huge fan of the obverse eye appeal but it is what it is

Here is my 38b, PCGS (OGH) MS63. Photos are a bit dark, but these pick up the die cracks and clashes OK.
