Hi All,

I'm still new at searching bills and I found this one. Feels the same as other dollars but looks very different. Not sure whats going on here; if it's just circulation damage or a possible offset error. Would love your opinions.

Thanks!

Just seeing the ink through on the other side and not an offset error.
Good luck in your searching.

My initial thought was oil, so I took a random note and spayed both sides of it with Pam. The note became slightly translucent, which is what I expected. I don't believe it's an offset error, but I'd need to inspect it in-hand. Does it smell funny ?

Note, after being sprayed with canola oil. It's laying on top of a white paper towel.

@steveintampa it does smell a little off, can't tell if it's oil - but I think you may be onto something. I appreciate you doing the experiment!

Steve, did you use butter-flavored Pam?

I actually strayed from the name brand this time and bought the Great Value ( Walmart private label) brand Spray Canola oil.

These look like home brewed offsets. It's kind of funny that SteveInTampa is using "Great Value" spray oil to create his offset. Is it worth over a dollar yet Steve? I know it's for science, that's what makes it alright, go Steve!

Water DOES NOT damage US Paper money.... take a U.S. note and put it in a pan of water for a day. After that you can take it out and use paper towels and WEIGHT to press it out, or just let it dry. I see many pressed notes at shows, etc. *** Only do for "SCIENCE" :)

I think the OP was using the phrase "water damage" to mean sweat or found in a water mixture like a puddle with impurities and oils. This could lead to the linen becoming more translucent where the back side print is seen through the note when it dries. However you are correct. If you soak the note in distilled water there will be no essential damage to the note itself.

I too have a 2017 series A. I manage a ups store and noticed it immediately. I thought it was offset but reading replies maybe not.

Well the bill I have smells off as well. Particularly on the side where its most visible. when I clean the drums and rollers on our offset duplicator I use mineral oil and spirits but I've never had it linger on prints.
