I bought this as a business strike recently, but now that I have it in hand, it looks like it may be a proof. It has mirror surfaces, especially the reverse. The obverse fields are somewhat impaired, so the reflectivity isn't quite as obvious there. Are there any die markers that would confirm a proof strike, or did they use the same dies for proof and business strikes? Would there be any benefit to sending it to a TPG to confirm that it's an impaired proof?

Looks like a high grade business strike. Reverse denticles at 6 o'clock does not seem consistent with a proof.

I'd say its's a (beautiful) business strike as well.

It might be just the lighting. Here's another image with a different lighting angle. I've never seen a business strike Barber half with mirrored, prooflike surfaces like this.

There are others on Heritage that appear to have a similar thin rim and the denticle appearance at the bottom of the reverse, so to me that doesn't rule it out. Just an observation. Beautiful coin either way.

That's a beauty alright, but with the new picture, I notice there's a scratch below the E of States.

I'd also say it's a business strike, not fully squared rims.
Excellent coin!!!

Few things. Firstly, the strike is incomplete, which, while it cannot rule out that it is a proof, certainly reduces the likelyhood. Secondly, it appears to be circulated from the first set of photos. This is either PR-58 or AU Details Altered Surfaces

Marvelous coin! You should slab it, even just for the protection. A few dings and it goes from a $5000 coin to a $500 coin.

Thanks for the comments everyone. @Grape, I'm not sure where you're seeing an incomplete strike. It looks fully struck to me. It definitely hasn't seen circulation--the reverse has the small mark near STATES and a tiny one on the shield, but virtually no other marks at all. But the obverse has been messed with. Hard to see with the pics, but someone must have rubbed or buffed the fields on the obverse, so it's a details coin either way. And it therefore doesn't change the value that much whether it's a business strike or proof.

The more I look at it, the more I think it's a proof coin. I guess I'm not seeing what everyone else sees that makes you think business strike. Here are 4 straight-graded proof 1904 Barbers that sold on Heritage, and to me the rims, denticles, and strike sharpness look the same. Because of the obverse altered surfaces I'm not going to get it graded, so I guess I'll never know for sure.
