It's hard to tell because it's so dirty but above the F looks like something imbedded in there? What do you all think?

@miss, I agree that with this black discoloration it is hard to know what is going on. I suspect that whatever that black stuff is, a piece of it flaked off above the F of OF just as happened to the M and E of AMERICA.

An acetone bath might clear things up a bit.

You all were right. Just gunk. Does acetone ruin a coin for grading? for instance... if that coin did have something imbedded into it after I had used the acetone could I still have it graded?

I think that as a general rule, a bath in pure acetone doesn't hurt a coin's changes of being straight-graded by the TPGs.

No, acetone will not ruin a coin. In fact it can help the appearance of a dirty coin.
I soak most coins I get in acetone after I buy them to remove any oils or residue that may have accumulated.

And after you soak them do you just run them under water or soap and water or does it matter?

I just rinse mine in distilled water and let them air dry.
