I have marked down the date of this Drachm from the Nezak Huns as being between 625 and 711 AD, but most auction houses use a starting date of early or mid 7th century. It was minted in Kabul and is attributed as Gobl 200.   "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."

Here's another drachm. Khosrau II Drachm, 623
Ahmatana (Hamadan). Silver, 33mm, 4.10g. Bust right, wearing mural crown with frontal crescent, two wings, and star-in-crescent; ribbons and crescents on shoulders; stars flanking crown; double border, star-in-crescents. Fire altar with ribbons; flanked by two attendants; star and crescent flanking flames; triple border, star-in-crescents in margin; year 33; mint AHM (Göbl type II/3). |

Oh yes that is a good Sasanian Drachm @john. Here is mine from a few years later (629/630 AD). This one was minted at Yazd under the authority of Artashir III. I have it attributed as Gobl II/1.   "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."

For sure Sasanian Drachms are plentiful enough that they can fit into almost anyone's budget. In fact, I see one listed on ma-shops right now for just under $20 (plus shipping). This Byzantine Follis was a bit more expensive than that and closes out my contribution to this decade. It was minted at Constantinople under the authority of Heraclius in 625-626 AD. The reverse features monogram #23, a regnal year of 16, and a delta in the exergue. I have attributed it as Sear 808.   Let's drop back to the decade of the 610s starting tomorrow morning. I had several busy days and forgot to post this coin, which shares the type of Spence's coin above. Apparently I didn't post it in the 2nd edition either...   Byzantine Empire, Heraclian dynasty Heraclius (with Heraclius Constantine and Martina) AE follis (40 nummi), Constantinople mint Obverse: Heraclius standing centre, with Heraclius Constantine on right and Martina on left Reverse: large M, ANNO above, monogram left, regnal year right, CON below (officina letter illegible) dated RY 16+x (possible 16-19, most likely 17) = AD 625-9 (most likely 626/7) 23x23 mm (diagonal 27 mm), ~5.5 grams Sear (Byzantine) 808, Numista 188684I believe Spence's coin is RY 19 (X/YI/II), which would make it AD 628/9. Could also be XY/II for RY 18 = 627/8, but that II (at 4 hours) is definite so it's not 16 for sure. Still the same decade. I do have a Sassanian drachm (that I got cheap because it was in crap condition) but I don't recall if I ever posted the pics on CCF. (They don't seem to be in my previous uploads, but that page is loading so badly that I can't tell for sure.) |

Ok good to know. I'll drop us back to the 610s now, but will pause for a little while to allow you to find your pics. Here is a Byzantine Solidus that is datable to the period of 616 to 625 AD. I have attributed it as Sear 738.   "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."

Thought I'd start off this decade with a coin from a kingdom that hasn't yet been represented on this thread: the Pyu Kingdom of Burma. This AR Unit was struck at Sri Kshetra between 600 and 637 AD. It is attributed as MSEA 414 and is listed on Zeno as #34307. The coin is pretty hefty (30 mm and 11.1 g) and is slightly domed.   "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."

Today I can bring us back to the Sasanian Empire. This Hemi-Drachm was minted in 601 to 627 AD under the authority of King Khosrow II. It is attributed as Göbl II13.   "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."

Here is a new arrival for me--just in time to be posted for this decade. It is an AE Unit from the Ustrushana Principality of Sogdiana. It might have been issued under the authority of King Chirdmish, but generally belongs to the date range of 600 to 720 AD. The obv has a vaguely Sasanian portrait while the reverse shows a double tamgha. I have attributed it as Smirnova 1425.   "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."

Here is my last coin for this decade, and the one that will help us move backwards in time again. This is another Byzantine Solidus. It was minted at Constantinople between 603 and 607 AD. I have attributed it as Sear 618.   "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."
