I found it while cleaning the room I'm moving into (ten straight hours of grueling work yielded a Danish cookie jar full of pennies). I can't find anything similar online but I stumbled upon this forum during my search.
Any insight on to what happened to this to make it look the way it does?

Guessing this was deliberately sanded down, exposing the zinc core.

Not an error, nor "wear and tear" it's been (most likely) deliberately ground down and destroyed. Post mint damage ( PMD).

to the CCF, Elizabeth!

I guess I must be A PMD collector. I find a lot of these oddly beat up pennies. This one looked so shiny otherwise, pretty contrast. Is there a section for PMD specifically? I have a lot of cool ones. I tend to like them more than errors.

Looks like it was sanded down by a belt sander.. Notice that the scratches are linear and parallel to one another, not swirled as you would expect from a orbital sander or grinder

Type PMD or post mint damage in the search box upper left of page for tons of info.
