I saw this beautiful toned 1837 Seated Liberty half dime on eBay. It is listed for nearly 40,000 dollars! PCGS price guide, which I know is higher than bid/gray sheet, puts the price at 3,000. Am I missing something? What is a coin like this being priced so high? Would anyone actually buy it at this price?

Hey! That coin looks familiar!

Belongs to our shop. Julian thinks the coin is a 68 in a 65 holder and priced it as such.I grade it a 67 personally. Julian doesn't do the resubmisson game. He's kinda old fashioned in that he thinks coins will sell for what they are rather than what the plastic says.

If you're asking over 10x price guide because you think it grades three points higher than what PCGS says, it seems appropriate to resubmit it and remove any doubt. What's with the ".50" on there, too? Seems kind of insulting, in my opinion. Just my Two Cents.

It sure is a nice coin regardless of what PCGS calls it. The True View is here: https://www.PCGS.com/cert/18223783

Simply gorgeous, I'd call it at least an MS66+ or MS67 myself (not having it in hand, yet knowing Julian has super star coins in inventory). The last PCGS MS67 sold at auction was by Legend. It brought $13K+

No Large Date 1837 half dimes have graded higher than MS67 at either PCGS or NGC so an MS68 maybe reaching, but then it's not my coin, and Julian can sell it however he wants, just like Richard Picker used too.

When asked the grade of a coin Mr. Picker had in his case at a show his answer was always "I grade that at $ X,XXX" no grade - just a price, that way you either agreed with him, or countered with another price to see if he might budge, he usually did not. Fair enough.

Current MS67 pricing is $19K and no Large Date coins exist in MS68. The Small Dates do and they show up priced at $47,500. Here is a True View on a 1837 Small Date in MS68 just for comparison. https://www.PCGS.com/cert/06666555 it's a wow coin for sure, and not far off from the coin in discussion IMO.

Julian is extremely cheap, anyone who has met him will tell you. He buys the cheapest anything he can, from food to toilet paper. He doesn't like having to get things slabbed in the first place, so having to pay extra for them to fix their mistake is just not something he does. As for the $0.5, I have no idea, Julian pricing

Thought I'd add in this, I was browsing early this morning and remembered this coin in the upcoming, Stack's/Bowers Auction. They have a MS67 PCGS 1837 half dime Large Date coming up in the ANA Rarities Sale sale Lot #4050, so I guess we will soon see what the current market for a really nice MS67 example is worth.

You can ask for anything on EBAY, $1M for a 1964 Kennedy half dollar roll coin if you want. Doesn't mean you'll get it...

The Stack's/Bowers coin I linked above ended up selling for $21,600 in a PCGS 67 & CAC slab, so there is the market price. Not $40K but still over $20K at least.
