It looks like this is some sort of residue stuck to the coin.

Possible glue and paper attached on the reverse? If is Glue and paper it will be heavier than normal (3.11 grams) If it were a lamination issue, then the weight would be less than the normal weight.

No, the planchet is 95% copper. What ever is on the coin is probably glue and some other substance.

@day, first welcome to CCF. Second, with regard to Quote: It is copper on top. this cent may have a copper-colored substance on top of the coin, but we are saying that it most likely is not actually copper. Either way, this would have happened after this coin left the mint.

Quote: It looks as if maybe the coin next to it was peeling and this coin took the pill from that coin. Can you please explain this? I'm drawing a complete blank. to the CCF!

Not sure how to quote others, not seeing a button for that. Merclover like there was another coin that was peeling.
Doesn't just look copper it is copper. I plan to weigh it when I can and will try acetone as well. I plan to take it to the best coin guy I know in my state, just gotta get the funds to go 4 hours to see him. I wish the internet had the ability to hand others the coin to see. I don't know how else to show you or explain.

No need to take it to anyone. In just the responses that you have already, there is probably 300 years of collecting, I'll add mine, this is glue. An acetone soak will tell you all you need to know. If acetone won't take it off, try a water soak.

Very nice images. They show the issue very well. Quote: ... will try acetone as well. Try this first, please. It will save you a lot of time, consternation, and a four-hour drive. Quote: Not sure how to quote others, not seeing a button for that. -Under the "Reply" box: Click the "Switch To Full Reply" button. -Near the top of that page is "Format:" with 14 square buttons to the right. -The second to last button has a page with a Red Arrow on it. -Click it and then "Copy and Paste" the words you want to quote and insert the words between the "quote] [/quote". -Voila, it's quoted.
