...he was most intrigued by the Christian legend of Prester John and the expansion of Portuguese trade.

At a certain point, the Portuguese actually thought they found Prester John in Ethiopia. Also helped by the fact that in 1306, a group of Ambassadors from the emperor of Ethiopia visited Europe and mentioned Prester John as the patriarch of their church.

@hfjacinto, are you planning a "Portugueses-style 7070"?

I would like to, but Portugal released a lot of coins and some aren't easy to find and others I'm not interested in (like the Euros), so this is my just what I found locally coins from Portugal. It's kind of like a 3535.

This one I can say was influenced because of Steve. No real history to present. The clad 50 centavos while present in the wild, were mostly saved as the copper 50 centavos had supplemented these.

While I had a few all were circulated to a point. Allens had this one and the 3 prior coins, so I picked it up also.

Issuer: Portugal
Period: Second Republic (1926-1974)
Type: Standard circulation coin
Years: 1927-1968
Value: 50 Centavos (0.5 PTE)
Currency: Escudo (1911-2001)
Composition: Copper-nickel
Weight: 4.62 g
Diameter: 23 mm
Thickness: 1.53 mm
Shape: Round
Orientation: Medal alignment
Demonetized: 02-28-2002
References: KM# 577
Mintage: 7,654,000

This coin oozes luster.

A beautiful coin JasonKflo.
I love the design on those coins and the 50 centavos too, especially on the obverse.
