Well the damage on other areas it shouting altered coin. Here is an overlay to see where the mintmark would fall on the reverse side, to see where the reverse could have flatted devices or a bulge on that area:

The vertical of the D mintmark is not curved like the way you drew it.

I made an overlay to see if that curve matches the shape and size of the Denver mintmark. Turns out the portion we see does seem to match somewhat but the tilt is absurd and there are significant parts missing.

Side note: No way would damage this small show on the reverse.

Thanks for taking another look at this Tanman.

I see that upper serif looking thing and am not sure that is part of the visible D. You are right about the straightness of the D. I was trying to illustrate the connection to the serifs. I've re-illustrated here. I believe the mark through the S is actually the upper serif of the D and its rotated counterclockwise.

The D in your drawing is too small. Even if the mintmark was tilted counter-clockwise, you would still expect a large portion of the upper serif of the D to show to the left of the S and the vertical of the D should show in the lower opening. Not to mention this still requires a 30+ degree rotation to that initial mintmark punch.

On the actual OMM-001 the S is considerably larger than the D.

Still not convinced it's not just post mint damage. We could bounce back and forth forever, but unless more of these are found, I remain in the damage camp, sorry.

If it were legit, there would be 100's of thousands of these out there and would have been reported back then with something that looks that obvious. There has been no report of this happening, so I still feel it is a damaged coin.

I took some additional photos that show the D more clearly. I have this posted at CONECA attributions services so I'll update when possible.

Well, I got a response from CONECA that is similar to what I have heard here that it is damage of some sort. I thought my last photos were pretty definitive but oh well. Still have yet to hear back from J.Wexler.

If it were the OMM, you should still be able to see the vertical bar of the D above the lower serif.

Well, with the help of a cactus spine I was able to reveal the vertical bar. Even though it is apparently an OMM and probably a new listing, it still may not be listable due to the coins condition. This is perplexing to me but it is what it is.

I believe circulation flattening (top inner serif) and Die Deterioration is creating an illusion of the D being punched into the S.

If that mark nearer the center of the mintmark is what you are calling a vertical bar, that's almost the exact same outline you highlighted in your previous pictures. And I still have the same opinion on it: that's way too small to be a D mintmark.

On OMM-001 the D is smaller than the S. This seems to be in that ballpark albeit with heavy circulation flattening and different rotation. Also the S may have slight RPM enlarging making look bigger.

May I toss out another idea for discussion?

Here is the OP's pic, with color removed and an area circled:

This area looks like added metal. Could all or most of this be the combination of a well-placed minor struck through fragment, followed by PMD?
