Looking for some help at identifying if this 1796 15star Liberty coin that has been in the family for over 50yrs is real or not.

Not genuine. Sorry. There are many thousands of copies like this floating around.

Thanks for the replies! I had my suspicions based on real ones I have seen but curious in particular on this one what the main tells are so that I can explain it to my hopeful grandfather.

If you look at the rim, you see the coin has a raised flat rim. That rim style did not exist in 1796.

First glance fake. Overall details, strike, and fonts are big giveaways. This one also has the classic Chinese counterfeit look to it. Most likely silver plated brass.

An easy PUP for me is the location of the bottom star on the left side.
It should be lower under the first curl of hair.
