Resources For Recovering Stolen Coin

cdqguy Valued Member United States 56 Posts	Posted 01/07/2022 6:44 pm A recent ebay purchase of an ANACS EF40 1819 large cent ($229) was scheduled for delivery today. The 6x9 padded mailer arrived with the daily mail, but the top had been slit open and the envelope was empty. I filed a theft report with USPS and, via the police department, will get on the pawn shop hot goods list on Monday. This was via first class, not priority, and was not insured. Of course I will not be repeating this purchase method. Beyond those obvious steps I am wondering if there any avenues within the numismatic community to list the coin as stolen, say perhaps via a dealer network? I recall one high profile story from a couple of years ago, where a coin that had been lifted from a Florida coin show was recovered when the perp attempted to sell it at a shop. Basically because for the most part I doubt anyone really searched the bulletins when they are making a purchase. Also most reports are for items that are either generic enough no definite identification can be made, or are poorly described. Slabbed material would have a better chance at recovery if there was an automatically searchable database. Scan the barcode on the slab and it checks the DB for a match. Unfortunately no such DB exists. And it could still be defeated by crackouts and regrading. It would be one place where the TPG's could really help though since the digital fingerprinting PCGS now does on secure shield submissions has the ability to recognize a coin if it is resubmitted. Observations: ~ selecting the NMC Bulletins page, it looks like he monitors mainly large-scale thefts. Some single shipment losses are listed with astounding $ values. ~ short of your idea for a digital verification system, if dealers could make it a weekly practice to check the new theft bulletins, then there might be improved recovery rates. Many very likely alreadyy do this. So far there are not so many notices that it would take long to keep current with. ~ we have a current trend of releasing felons from jail ahead of schedule; forgive the society-wide speculation, but high-value small-size merchandise like stolen coins may now become more vulnerable as a 'market' for those needing quick cash. Which makes cranking up the defenses via efficient communication more urgent. Report this Post to the Staff

Nearly three weeks after submitting the theft report at NumismaticCrimes.org it does not appear on their new bulletins list. They have not responded to two cordial emails inquiring if they received the report. I am left to assume that a theft of this relatively low dollar value is below what they want to deal with. It looks like my final action will be to call the police departments in each of the localities where the parcel was processed, i.e., in hopes of adding it to the pawn shop lists in those areas before passing the thirty day waiting period. I don't doubt that the consensus here on CC might be to simply let it go. Guess I have a nagging sense of principle violated with a shred of hope that it is still that final step away from giving up.
