Here's another Sir Walter Raleigh piece - a highly stylized 81mm bronze medal struck by the Paris Mint and released back in 1972. (Figured I'd bring it out on its 50th Anniversary!) The obverse design is particularly interesting in that it incorporates several small design elements representative of Sir Walter's life: to the left of Raleigh's portrait (viewer's perspective) is seen an anchor and quill pen that symbolize Sir Walter's careers as an explorer and author; to the right of the portrait is depicted an executioner's axe which is symbolic of Raleigh's beheading/execution. The medal was designed by Jean Asselberg.
