This is one I would dip in acetone to see if the D would pop off. I would be inclined to say fake only because the D doesn't have the triangle inside it. The wear on the D looks unnatural. Also you can see toning around the D but nowhere else. I may also be paranoid as so many of the 16-D are fakes.

Yo Tone , I believe that is a D by the curvature on the left side of the D. But like hfjacinto says it could also be glued on so yes give it an acetone soak . Wait for the 16-D experts to chime in .

No expert here but the D appears to be too low and fat. Does anybody have a source for the four MM positions with images? If you have the coin, check the rim for a repaired hole as it could be embossed from within.

Here's a reference page from The authoritative reference on Mercury dimes by Wexler and Flynn. The OP D location appears to be in position #3, a closer examination of the mint mark will be needed, there are known genuine S mint mark tooled to look like a D, and this is why the MM is out of proportion. I hope I didn't infringe on any copyright protection by including this page, if so please buy the book, as there are many interesting fact that's wasn't included in other Mercury dime books. As Kevin Flynn told me once did I know that there was another pattern coin that was not listed in Judd or Pollock.

All I can say is that it looks suspicious. A glued mintmark was my first thought because there are not any obvious toolmarks.

MM looks out of position and too fat.
I'm in the fake camp.

I still say it's circulation wear . That's flattening out the MM .

Fascinating. Without further conversation, I'm leaning toward circulation flattening. Would love to see the coin in-hand.

Wear like that can do a number on a coin.

Here's my circulation 16-D reverse, even with circulation wear, the diamond in the middle of the D should still have some form of persents, but it is missing with the OP picture. I think a grade in G4 and lower that's when it starts to fade out completely. Either way, all lower grade 16-D needs to be authenticated by 3rd party grading company.

Possibly the most faked coin in the World. I'd simply send it in to a TPGS to be sure one way or other.
