Personally, if I had to choose between using a fixed amount of money to buy either three modern coins from the same country or one 1800s coin from that same country, I'd buy the single old coin, every time.
But then, I've never particularly obsessed about paying high prices for super-top-grade coins. I'd rather pay less money to own a coin that people actually used as money, and that I can actually handle without worrying that I'm erasing hundreds of dollars off the value.
