I just purchased a bunch of these lights for Christmas presidents. They work very well. Lights up the entire coin no shadows. These are very inexpensive. One can find them for under 10 bucks.

Thanks so much for this tip. I've tried the book and bottle cap method and it's a game changer for my shaky old hands.

The light is a problem so I'm going to look for the selfie light ring. That will impress my grandkids, lol.

The selfie ring will need something to diffuse the light. I describe that at the start as just being a ring of tissue I cut and taped to it.

If someone wanted to just use some small desklamps or other LEDs, they likely could get a decent lighting setup as well.

Anymore I admit I am in a hurry typically and just use the setup near a window to let ambient light hit the coin. Sometimes I angle an LED flashlight onto it the far-from-window edge of the coin if I see a dark area at the point furthest from the window.

If it is a bright day outside I typically find I don't need anything extra.

I like the "raised/auto focus" idea ... definitely an issue in my experience.
