I purchased the coin online and it was advertised as a 1st Century BCE Castulo Semis. However, I doubt the accuracy of this claim. The images and inscription on the coin don't seem to match any coins typically from Castulo. After searching through coin catalogs, online stores, and academic papers, I was unable to find any Iberian coin that matched mine. I have also contacted multiple Spanish auction houses and they can't match the coin with anything in their archives, but do believe it's an authentic Iberian. The coin (see attached images) has a left-facing portrait on the front. On the reverse, there is a left-facing bull with a possible plow under the back legs. Above the bull is an inscription in what I believe to be liby-phoenecian script. The characters "XIS" are visible.  Edited by Lgandrews

@lga, since we know this coin is old, I'm going to move the thread over to the ancients subforum. Hopefully we can get some good eyes on it for you.

I would guess it's an issue from Carisa/Carissa, bust left/horseman.

@Bob L I contacted a Spanish auction house and they also concluded it was from Carisa.

If it is Carisa, and assuming the inscription says Carisa, what are the missing characters in the Iberian script? I looked at other Carisa coins and the characters don't seem to match

To me it looks like the coin was broken and maybe it was a small flan as well. Therefore the legend is not visible. What appears to be letters are actually the horses legs. What is under the horse that looks like a large X I don't know, maybe something with the encrustation. Great post Lgandrews.  |
