To celebrate the First Anniversary of Independence, Vanuatu issued the 1983 First National Coinage Collection to form part of the 'Symbols of Nations' series of coins.

The common obverse features the National Emblem which depicts a Chief standing on a island holding a spear. Behind the Chief is a pig's tusk which forms part of the country's flag, and is regarded as a symbol of wealth.

The Reverse features designs of Vanuatu's symbolised in its country's natural habitat, designs were created by A.W. Airs.

I have done a few cruises to Vanuatu and always pick up some coins while there.
I'm only missing the 50 Vatu from the 1983 set. Actually only need 15 coins to complete the Vatu circulation coins.

Pretty small nation, I bet the scuba diving would be awesome there. Long ways to go from Manitoba, Canada. I'm glad to have come across this coin set by random chance.

Nice. I think on the odd occasion I find a 20 vatu in change it's a 1983 - makes sense that it was the first year of issue.

Great set, you can tell The Royal Mint packaging, they used these card folders for many Commonwealth countries in the 80s. This must have been before the 100 vatu coin was added.

The sizes of these coins are interestingly based on the old New Hebrides Franc which was a French production and based on the New Caledonian Franc. The cupro nickel coins were the same but actuallu used brass for the 1, 2, 5 franc coins rather than the Aluminium they used for New Caledonia and French Polynesia.

In 2015 Vanuatu reformed their coins for a smaller stainless steel set and eliminated the 1 and 2 vatu coins.

I love COINS!!!
