They had a plain edge. Why, I don't know. Many collectors are unaware of this.

The reason for no reeds was to make it more distinguishable
between it and the quarter which was less than 3 mm larger.

You guys didn't know that?! The plain edge caught me off guard when I purchased my first one. Another strange feature on the Twenty Cent Piece is that LIBERTY on shield is raised, not incuse like all other seated designs. |

Come on guys, all coins have a third side!! I was just about to head for bed, but decided to crack the safe just to photograph the edge. Here is an Twenty Cent Piece pictured next to a Seated quarter.  |

Does that make it the largest circulating silver U.S. coin without a reeded or lettered/designed edge? The only other one I can think of off the top of my head is the Three Cent Silver. |

Thanks @jacrispies. That's one of the disadvantages of slabs - it's tough to see the edge!

I own one 20 cent coin. But I have never noticed such features, especially I was struck by the shield and the words "liberty".

On the subject of differentiating coins, they even experimented with using various hole shapes. I recall something about an emphasis on blind people (the reeded versus plain edge would have helped with that), but I can't recall where I read it. From a BCCS journal article:  |
