My last 1981 coinz East Germany 10 Pfennig, all their coins were aluminium except the 20 Pfennig and 5 Marks which were brass! Mexico 20 Pesos, a huge beautiful coin with Mayan culture. As inflation deepened, the precious metal pesos gave way to large cupronickel coins, which shrunk in size through the 80s. Hong Kong $5 - introduced in 1979 to replace yet another oversized multisided cupro nickel coin. Cupronickel was king in the 70s and 80s. Multi sided coins were perfect for those debanknoted denominations. Of course the later 80s saw the rise of gold coloured brass and aluminium coins. The 1990s and 2000s was the golden age of steel and bimetallic coins The period 1970 to 1990 was the worst for inflation globally. The NZ dollar lost 10x its value in the period.

1980, unusually, was only the third year since the introdiuction of decimal currency that the whole range of coins from the halfpenny to the 50p were issued for circulation. Here is the 2p: Jersey issued its last decimal coins with the 'New Pence' reverse: Isle of Man Winter Olympics crown: San Marino 200 Lire: Portugal (Azores) 25 Escudos: Falkland Islands 50 pence: NIcaragua 50 centavos and 5 Cordobas: Greece 50 Drachma: Laos 10 att: Belgium 20 Francs: Egypt 10 piastres: Uruguay 5 Pesos: Botswana 5 and 10 thebe: Finally a full set of Spanish coins from 1980, looking forward to the 1982 Soccer World Cup:

Great coins guys, love that Spanish set, honestly thought the 50 cents had gone by that stage! NZ for the 3rd year in a row issued everything in 1980 This is the last year you see it "all" I am dialing it back from now on. It was a big year for most denominations. The 2 cents was fairly low at 10 million coins (Mostly 25 - 50 million a year), but its still a lot. Big dollar was the first of the bird coins of the 1980s. This showed a fantail a playful and affectionate little bird that follows you around as you walk through the bush. They were supposed to do one more bird each year, but Royal Visits and Anniversaries intervened, so we only got birds in 1980, 82, 84, 85, 86 and 88. Bird issuing carried on with 1990s $5 coins though! Australia also went gangbusters on the coins in 1980 with everything coming out and in generous numbers. I am lucky to have high grade examples of all but the 1c and 50c Like NZ the full year sets stop here too. I am dialling it back and transisitioning to primarily silver Empire coins.

1980 world coins Finland/Suomi - 1 Markka Kenya - 10 Cents (Senti Kumi) - large Brass coin Papua New Guinea - 50 Toea, Festival of Arts. Many Papuan coins are usually found heavily worn. This pair is barely fine and it was PNG's first 50 Toea coin. The next was in 1991.
