Nickels do not have a clad layer. This is just environmental toning.

Ok, forgive my ignorance. This scratch was on the coin when I found it. It looks like a copper scratch.

Note the rim is showing where the coating is missing off the coin. It will eventually turn back to the normal color, but will be dull in luster.

It will take sometime for this to happen to this coin.
