Picked these up about a month or so ago. Do not see nationals with consecutive serials all that often. More often you may see them with the same serials since all notes on the same sheet had the same serial. Both notes also have the same cutting pattern. Superbly preserved too in XF/AU condition.

That's a fantastic pair, Wheatback. And it's not likely that the VNB of Petersburg issued that many notes. Congratulations on an excellent acquisition!

Quite the opposite! This bank was a prolific issuer during the national banking period. This is evident just by the serial, coming from sheets 172,198 and 172,199. $20s were on the bottom of a sheet of 4 set up as 10-10-10-20. So that's at least 172,000 blue seal $20s produced and you can multiple the $10 by 3. This bank was doing A LOT of business in its day.

My understanding is that all four notes on a sheet shared the same serial number but different plate position letters, A,B,C and D.

Good to know - I learn something every time I pay a visit to this forum.

So, does this mean that the consecutive serial number notes @Wheat has were from consecutive sheets? Makes sense to me but only a guess.

Yes, all large size notes and small size type 1 notes had the same serial on the sheet. The only thing that varied was the plate position. Type 2 notes had their own unique serial number per note.

These notes would be from two consecutive sheets, but also somewhere out there it's possible there's 3 $10s from each of these sheets with the same two serial numbers as the $20s.
