So a local post office put the "Giftware" sets for 2023 on sale this week and I picked up an "Oh Canada" just to see the design.

Nickel through $2 are all normal dated 2023 as expected.. (Loon has a special design as expected).

Obverse though:
- Monarch QEII
- All have a 1952-2022 detail below the bust. What I noted as a hypen is actually four dots in a diamond pattern.

So, it will be interesting to see what the RCM posts next week for the annual sets... I anticipate we will see QEII on the obverse until the coronation in May,

@vonigohcr: Thanks for the design update!

I agree, next week's release will be interesting re: the Monarch's portrait. As I mentioned in a previous post, a last "go 'round" for QEII while a new official Royal coinage portrait for Charles is developed and approved would not surprise me.

some of these coins are now on ebay, and it leads me to a question because of what I specifically collect.. my albums are for coins released for general circulation, even if it is commemorative (solemn tribute, Summit Series, 1992 quarters, etc.) To me, even though these coins can be cracked from their sets and actually spent, I don't pick them up as "general circulation".

But could I get a head start on "general circulation" if the design will be the same? (Considering those coins don't usually show up till the middle of the year)..
Does anyone know if the general 2023 coins have the same design as those in these sets? (I don't mean the obvious substitute of the loon for the moose in the sets..) I mean will the new obverses have that 1952::2002 commemoration, with QEII along the standard 2023, or has it been announced somewhere that the 2023's will have no extra dates, with KCIII?
thanks..

The general circulation set is typically a version of the Circulating set that is normally released in January... That set has not yet been released this year. I have wondered whether it will be released with QEII and the 4 dots as the giftware sets have been at some point or whether a new set with KCIII will be released after the coronation in May.

The January release usually includes the SD and the Silver proof set but these were split across January and February this year.
