As mentioned in some of the old posts on this one, it appears that the coin was rubbed on both the obverse and reverse. It was also mentioned that maybe I should soak it in acetone to see what happens. Acetone did nothing. Given the rub marks, I decided to leave it on a window sill in direct sunlight, but outside last summer in 90/100 degree temps and moderate humidity. After about 6 weeks on the obverse and two weeks or so on the reverse, this is how it changed. I'm going to set it out again here shortly for the summer, with a little more reverse exposure, and see where it ends up. Had it not been for the annoying rubs marks, I wouldn't have experimented. This was my first CBH purchase, and not a very good one. Thankfully I found CCF and other resources shortly after and have learned a whole heck of a lot since. And yes, I know that this is sacrilegious to some, but it is a high mintage low value details coin, so I figured why not.   |

Jacrispies, as said above, I left it outside in direct sunlight, as in 8hrs day, in 90/100 degree temps with humidity ranging mostly from 40-70 on most days. It spent about 6 weeks on the obverse and two weeks on the reverse. Otherwise I did nothing to it other than an acetone bath which did nothing.

Sunlight would not bleach a coin and the color is materially different from the original photo. At what point did it change?

Cointagous, I appreciate your skepticism. I'm just reporting what I did. I was only wanting to darken up the rubbed spots. I have no reason to be deceptive, I don't get off on that sort of thing.
I will add that the outdoor window ledge is brick and as I didn't want to risk any scratches, I left it in a clear flip. So that's what I know.
As said, I'm going to put it out again for the summer, and I'll share more pics down the road.

I surmise the initial photos were taken in very poor lighting. The new photos reveal a beautiful Capped Bust Half!

Sorry, I can't possibly believe a coin went from charcoal black to glistening silver by setting it on a shelf. Additionally, shielding the coin from nature by placing it in a plastic non-PVC flip would significantly slow down the process. That's just not how color and toning works in nature.

I am not accusing you of anything, just stating what is in the realm of possibility.
