This 1855 Large Cent is Newcomb N-8. I don't remember if I ever posted it, or if I did, I never wrote it down. I'll try to actually write it down this time around.

Your thoughts on a grade and any other comments are welcomed.

Is that a bad scuff over the eye?

Haven't graded a large cent in a long time so I won't take a guess on this one, but man these are such beautiful coins!

Scuff aside, I'll say EF40.

Looks AU-50 to me. Not seeing a scuff above the eye so straight grade on this one.

xf 45 slab grade. its like a 48 or something so I wouldnt be surprised to see it slab at 50.
I collect low grade large cents. I currently have >230 Sheldon varieties and >235 middle date Newcomb varieties.

No scuff. It's just light reflecting off the coin.

Coin is raw, not slabbed (almost all of my copper is stored in Kraft envelopes) -- I do have some slabbed early coins but that's a small % of my collection.

im using slab grade as shorthand for PCGS market grading standard where I think its like a 45+ or a 50-. using EAC standard I would grade this 40. I dont think NGCXtreeme has a standard for large cents, and I'mnot very familiar with that system yet, but it would probably be something like 7 on a 10 point scale.

doug bird had my favorite grading system ive encountered. he would just tell you how much he thought the coin was worth.

I'm going to stick with EF45 as the rim bump at 9:00 bothers me, even though it's small.
