Coucou. I haven't seen any discussion about this bird coin, which has an issue price of $109.95 CAD and a mintage of 7,500.

I thought it's just another coin from the mint. But I was wrong: this is one of the hottest coins in recent history:

I don't understand why a bird coin with a high mintage is selling at $600. There must be something unique about this coin. Does anyone know?

For almost a year, on every email I received from my mint rep, he was promoting this Blue Jay Coin. It was listed as 'first of a series'. I too questioned the large number released. I think in the future you'll be seeing this one back down at issue price.

The new one has taken it's place. The Cedar Waxwing mintage 7,500 list $109.95 cdn.

Some of the color coins are attractive to me, and I like birds but, these do nothing for me. Those prices are outrageous. I do like the fact that these will be in a series. I'm a sucker for series coins but, not at that price.

Actually its a beautiful colorized proof piece, first in a new series, and they were sold out everywhere with the 7,500 mintage for that particular design so there was quite a demand over the available total 7,500 supply. These are exactly the kind of coins I enjoy (moderns with lower mintage eye catching designs with potential high demand). In those cases where demand is greater than supply the secondhand pricing can go up quite a bit regardless of the 'high' starting cost and still selling at 4x+ the original price... obviously you must have some ability to spot which might have high demand beforehand in order to take advantage of these releases when its not for a personal collection because you like the coin design. Some info on the series: https://news.coinupdate.com/canada-...dar-waxwing/ Being first in a series also is a plus generally as when a series goes on if popular, new collectors will want to go back and buy the earlier releases which are no longer available.

Another 'similar' one I flagged you may like as also likely is the 2023 Perth Mint Australia World Money Fair Australian Kookaburra 1oz Silver Colored Coin.

I collect the series of 1 oz Silver Kook's. I still prefer them in just Silver and not colorized. There must just be something with colorized coins to me. Not my preferred thing - I guess.

Good info though - as usual!

@Dcadon: The Cedar Waxwing seems more appealing than the Blue Jay. And it's not sold out yet. So I bought one.

@datadragon: I don't think a mintage of 7,500 is low. Since the price of Blue Jay has increased five fold, I'm wondering if RCM really produced 7,500 coins. And yes, the 2023 Australian Kookaburra (World Money Fair) looks great. I actually liked it more than the Canadian ones.

@dsking, I'm the same: the Blue Jay's colour does nothing for me. The 2023 Australian Kookaburra World Money Fair special coin, on the other hand, has stunning colour.

This one is interesting and has a mintage of only 1000. The azure kingfisher is found in northern and eastern Australia and Tasmania and apparently this is the very first appearance of the Azure Kingfisher on any legal tender coin. Personally like dsking I'm not gung ho on the colored bird coins generally, especially at prices over $100 but thought to mention as it might be a nice add to someones collection possibly with that low mintage and being a first appearance. Maybe like comic books where first appearances are something important

I have the 2022 and 2023 issues in this series. The pricing for the 2021 is way out there, and I am not sure why.
