When I was kid my dad used to tell me to go in the bathroom with the lights out and I would see
the irradiated dimes glowing in the dark.

That sounds like something my dad would have done. Did he ever ask you to pull his finger?
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Yes indeed! He also used to tell me and my friends to go play on the train tracks.
That we did, and flattened many a coin on the tracks. My friend took a deflecting quarter to the forehead one time, from a passing high-speed commuter train 4-5 stiches for that one.
Those were the days!
