my first gold coin-- the first one that I bought-- was a 2008 1/10oz gold eagle proof; I still have it. I think I paid in the neighborhood of $130 for it.

I bought a collection from my dad and it had four $2.50 Indian head coins. I no longer own them and really regret selling them.

My first gold coin was my first coin ever... My grandfather bought me a birth year dated sovereign just after I was born and gave it to me on my birthday, though he kept it safe it until he passed... I guess he didn't think a young'un would have the correct presence to keep the coin out of trouble... I am happy he did because here I am nearly 60 yrs later with an UNC/MS 1963 Sovereign as the anchor to my collection.

I'm not sure how to reply. I don't really consider myself a "collector" as the coins I hold are for preservation/increase of capital. Secondly, is the first gold coin I ever acquired what we're looking for here (I no longer have it), or the coin in my possession that I've had the longest. Given all of that, the first gold coin I ever bought was a Liberty double eagle that I bought while a student at UC Santa Barbara. It was purchased for $100 in 1972. I bought it as a Christmas present for my girlfriend (now wife) as I put it in a gold bezel with a gold rope chain. It became an engagement ring when the girlfriend saw a similar piece in the window of a jewelry store and proclaimed it to be, "the ugliest piece of jewelry I've ever seen." The gold coin I've had the longest is (I think) a MCMLXXXVI St. Gaudens reissue that I bought in 1986 from the mint for whatever the original price was.

My first was a 1927 Saint Gaudens that I bought at a coin shop at Preston Road shopping center in Dallas, Texas in the early 1970's for $70. The dealer had a showcase pretty much full of Saints. He let me pick out the one I wanted. The only "high dollar" coin I remember him having in that group was a 1907 Roman Numerals high relief saint priced around 500$. Wished I could have afforded IT!

Mine was a 2000 1/4 oz AGE, purchased in 2000. Purchased shortly after my family moved to Texas, first visit to the LCS. Sadly, I no longer have it. I do still have a couple of the Morgan dollars I picked up in the same visit for $6 each.

Quote:I do still have a couple of the Morgan dollars I picked up in the same visit for $6 each. I could argue that is the better save.
