I am having trouble posting images - the problem is the image is at times rotated 90 degrees (right).
I go back to the image and try to compensate and rotate it left - that may work - or may not!!
I used the Pixir Desktop Image Optimizer - it sometimes help but not always. Below is a sample. Thanks

@joe, yes orienting pictures can be a struggle at times. If you are using your cell phone to take the original picture, trying rotating the phone (e.g. hold it in landscape rather than portrait or vice versa). That has worked for folks in the past.

You can do it without added software in windows 10. In file explorer, find the image and right mouse click on it then select rotate left or right. See if that works for you

Another is the free program faststone image viewer I use https://www.faststone.org/ using CTRL+R to resize up or normally down such as to 600 pixels or lower and CTRL+S to save in JPG with an options choice to even adjust the jpg quality . Its also capable to rotate just hitting R, cropping and adjust colors like brightness or contrast found on the right mouse click menu. When on pc thats the one I prefer over others.

Windows 7. That goes back a ways. Anyway, looks like you've had success.

What it comes down to is how everyone hold their phone when shooting straight down. you need to keep the phone as level as possible in order to get the entire coin in good focus. a slight tilt and the nearest part coin will be in focus and the furthest end will end up blurry.
So when holding the phone level the internal sensor is in limbo and randomly picks an orientation. (It the thing that helps with auto-rotation)

any way I used my 2 android phones to get a series of images one phone will be entirely in the image and the other, of course is taking the photo of the first phone taking an image of a coin.

Confused yet?
Maybe the images will help and an explanation of each will help.

have a look at the area just to the right of the 'take picture button' - on my phone it looks like a broken square with a dot in the middle and most importantly in ONE CORNER (pay attention to the corner dot. (RED circle under the BLUE Arrow)

The slightest tilt will change where the corner dot ends up.
4 images below show both the full phone and the resulting image without turning the phone or the coin. (take note of the background of the un-cropped coin - you can tell that the image has rotated but the terry cloth pattern is consistent with the coin.)

With the resulting image.

Very helpful stuff - that is an issue I was having and didn't understand why - I will pay attention now!
One problem I still have it when I am in good natural light I cannot see the screen to tell if I am in focus (or level) or not.
I am trying to find a way to shade the screen without shading the coin.
Thanks

I think that is a problem we all have. even if the screen brightness is maxed out.
